Riverside Bank Announces Free Shred Day Confidential documents shredded for free on May 17 at bank’s Santa Barbara Branch.Cape Coral, FL (May 7, 2008) – Riverside Bank continues to take steps to help their customers and community neighbors avoid being victims of identity theft and crime. On Saturday, May 17, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, community residents can bring any documents that contain confidential information to be immediately shredded at the bank’s Santa Barbara branch located at 2107 Santa Barbara Blvd. Cape Coral. Due to demand, participants are asked to limit their documents to be shredded to two box loads. “Last year we had over 100 cars pull into our Santa Barbara branch parking lot to shred their private documents,” said Rod Shoap, Senior Vice President and Security Officer of Riverside Bank. “Over 2,000 pounds of paper was shredded and recycled.” “This is just another one of the programs we offer our clients to help them avoid identity theft,” said John D. Moran, President and C.E.O. of Riverside Bank. “Identity theft is a serious problem that can cost time and money, can destroy your credit and ruin your good name. As a community bank, we are in the business of helping our customers improve their financial and credit situation and that means trying to protect them from needless risks.” This free service is being funded through Riverside Bank’s partnership with Business Security Consultants, Inc. of Cape Coral, a local company that provides consultation services in the areas of home and business security. The shredding will being handled by Waste Paper Technology, Inc. of Fort Myers whose mobile unit will be located in the bank-owned vacant lot located directly south Riverside Bank’s Santa Barbara headquarters. Riverside Bank’s annual shred day is just one of the ways the bank helps their customers avoid identity theft. For the past year, the Cape Coral-based bank has also been holding identity theft seminars, residential and business security surveys and other theft deterring services for their clients and local community groups. “Anytime you take someone else’s name, address, social security number, email address, drivers license number or date of birth and use it as your own, you are committing identity theft,” said Shoap. “Obviously, confidential documents contain this type of information which is why it is so important to destroy them appropriately. “ In 2006, the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) complaint list was dominated by identity theft and fraud issues for the seventh year in a row. The FTC reported that credit card fraud was the most pervasive form of identity theft at 25 percent, followed by utilities/phone fraud (16 percent), bank fraud (16 percent), and employment fraud (14 percent). In terms of victims per capita, Florida is included in the top states along with New York, California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, and Texas. “If a criminal gets any of your old bank checks they can download it on to their computer with your signature,” he added. “Then they go to an office supply store and order checks with your bank logo and account number and start using counterfeit checks.” Founded in 1997, Riverside Bank has grown to over $500 million in assets and currently operates 13 banking centers: in Lee, Sarasota and Collier counties. In addition to offering personal and business checking and savings accounts, Riverside Bank's services include on-line and ATM banking, personal, home equity, cash management, mortgage and commercial loans, investment services and products from mutual funds to annuities, 401K plans, group and individual health and life insurance, and on-line mortgage applications through WeDoDreams.com.
